Steve Levy joins the Leslie Munzer Neurological Institute in Educational Campaign to Prevent Neurological Injuries
PORT JEFFERSON STATION, NY, June 4, 2010 —In order to fully educate children, parents, coaches and other members of the public on how to prevent concussions and severe brain and spine injuries resulting from a variety of sports and recreational activities, the not-for-profit Leslie Munzer Neurological Institute of Long Island has initiated a free lecture program across Long Island, 12 months a year.
The inaugural lecture took place on Friday, March 5, 2010, at Robert Cushman Murphy Jr. High School in Stony Brook, NY, before an assembly of 350 students, in recognition of March as National Brain Injury Awareness Month. The program featured Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, who approved Local Law No. 44-2009 To Improve the Safety of Youth Sports Programs in Suffolk County and Increase Awareness of the Dangers of Head Injuries. Presenters also included renowned Long Island Neurosurgeons, Drs. Mihai Dimancescu and Alan Mechanic, and John Nitti, former captain of Yale's 1980 Ivy League football championship team and former member of the New York Jets.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 3.8 million sports and recreation-related concussions occur in the United States each year. Of that estimate, U.S. emergency departments treat approximately 135,000 sports and recreation-related traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI’s), including concussions, among children ages 5 to 18.
